The 500KB performance budget
Every image on a web page is a tax on the reader’s patience. On a mid-range phone with a mediocre connection, each extra megabyte of page weight adds seconds of staring at a blank screen — and a large share of visitors simply leave instead of waiting. Google’s Core Web Vitals turned this impatience into a ranking factor: Largest Contentful Paint, the metric that measures how fast the main content appears, is very often an image — usually the featured or hero image at the top of the article.
That is why experienced publishers work to a budget, and 500KB is the classic ceiling for a large content image. Under it, a featured image loads fast enough to keep both readers and search engines happy; over it, you are spending loading time on detail nobody can see on a phone screen.
Featured images that load instantly
A 500KB budget goes a long way when the dimensions are sane. A featured image displayed at 1200–1600 pixels wide needs no more source resolution than that — anything larger is invisible detail that only costs bytes. Export or resize to your display width first, then compress: the engine will find the highest quality under 500KB, and for most photographs it settles in the 75–85% range, where the result is indistinguishable from the original at article sizes. WebP typically squeezes another 20–30% out of the same image versus JPEG, so prefer it when your platform supports it, with JPEG as the safe universal choice.
Pair the compressed file with lazy loading for below-the-fold images, plus descriptive file names and alt text, and you have covered the three things that actually move the needle: weight, timing, and accessibility.
